What is basis?

Basis is the difference between the local cash price and the futures price. It reflects local supply/demand, transportation costs, and storage — the things that make your elevator's price different from what you see on CME.

Why it matters

A stronger (higher) basis means more money per bushel at your elevator. Tracking basis separately from futures lets you time each component independently for better overall pricing.

Basis strategies

Cash sale — Locks both futures + basis. Best when both are favorable.

HTA — Lock futures now, set basis later. Use when futures are strong but basis is weak.

Basis contract — Lock basis now, set futures later. Use when basis is strong but futures are low.
